We would like to introduce you to the SMART Competition. SMART is a global STEM and CTE hands-on learning experience for high school students. The SMART Competition (www.smartcompetition.org) promotes the understanding of Sustainable Materials And Renewable Technology.“SMART”.

The SMART Competition provides students with reality building design tools, donated to the competition by Bentley Systems (www.bentley.com). The Bentley design tools are the same as those used by over 800,000 engineering and architectural professionals every day. Students use a team-based practical investigation of sustainable building design and localized power generation. As part of the competition they learn about many different types of engineering and architectural professionals.

The SMART Competition is an excellent semester project that gives students the opportunity to explore, learn and become engaged in a real design challenge.  Outcomes support your classroom learning objectives and provide students with marketable skills.  As a result of the competition, your students:
  • Appreciate a multidisciplinary practical engineering and architectural design learning experience
  • Create intelligent, sustainable, energy and practical power conservation techniques
  • Apply a structured problem solving process to create a real-world solution
  • Develop approaches to renewable power generation and infrastructure (energy, transportation, sustainability) design
  • Apply and reinforce the math, physics and research methods you teach in the classroom
  • Apply technology, computer simulation and reality modeling to create a viable solution
  • Use project management, documentation and communication skills to successfully complete the competition
...and much, much more!

The competition is open to all high school students who attend public, private, parochial, charter and home-based schools.  In addition, students from other non-school based or informal education programs are invited to participate.  All students are welcome to participate without regard or bias of gender, race, socio-economic or academic performance level.
